All of our landscape lighting systems use low-voltage LED technology. Operating at just 12 volts through a step-down transformer, low-voltage systems are inherently safe. There is no risk of dangerous electrical shock if a wire is accidentally cut during gardening, and the system requires no buried conduit or electrician-installed circuits.

The energy efficiency of LED fixtures is remarkable. A single LED landscape light uses just 3 to 8 watts compared to 20 to 50 watts for a halogen equivalent, while producing equal or superior brightness. This means a complete landscape lighting system with 20 fixtures can run on less electricity than a single 100-watt incandescent bulb. LED fixtures also last 50,000 hours or more, eliminating the frequent bulb replacements that halogen systems require.

We select LED fixtures with warm white color temperatures, typically 2700K to 3000K, which produce a natural, inviting glow that complements the warm tones of Arizona’s desert landscape. Cool white or blue-toned lighting looks artificial in outdoor settings, and we specifically avoid it in our residential designs.

Uplighting: Showcasing Trees and Architecture

Uplighting is the most dramatic landscape lighting technique, and it is particularly effective in Arizona’s desert landscapes. By positioning fixtures at the base of trees, saguaro cacti, boulders, and architectural columns, we project light upward to illuminate these features against the night sky. The result is a striking visual effect that highlights the sculptural quality of desert vegetation and creates depth throughout your landscape.

For native trees like palo verde and desert willow, uplighting reveals the intricate branch structure and bark texture that are easy to overlook during the day. Large boulders take on a warm, golden glow that anchors your landscape design. Architectural features like stone columns, water features, and garden walls gain dimension and presence when lit from below.

We carefully position uplights at specific angles and distances to achieve the desired effect. A fixture placed too close creates harsh, unflattering light, while one placed too far produces a diffuse wash that lacks definition. Our nighttime design process allows us to test positions and angles in real time before committing to final placement.

Path Lights for Safety and Elegance

Beyond aesthetics, landscape lighting serves an essential safety function. Path lights installed along walkways, steps, driveways, and transitions between surfaces prevent trips and falls by clearly defining edges and grade changes. In Surprise, where many landscapes feature decomposed granite pathways, natural stone steps, and transitions between paver patios and turf areas, proper path lighting is critical for safe navigation after dark.

Our path light installations use fixtures positioned at regular intervals along both sides or alternating sides of walkways. We select fixture heights and spacing based on the specific pathway dimensions and surrounding landscape, ensuring uniform light coverage without creating glare or hot spots. Bollard-style path lights work well for wide pathways, while smaller hat-style fixtures are ideal for garden paths and narrow walkways.

Moonlighting: The Most Natural Lighting Effect

The moonlighting technique is one of our most requested effects for Surprise properties with mature trees. By mounting compact LED fixtures high in the canopy of a large tree, we aim light downward through the branches and leaves. The result is a soft, dappled pattern of light and shadow on the ground below that closely mimics natural moonlight filtering through a tree.

Moonlighting is particularly effective over outdoor dining areas, patios, and seating areas where you want ambient illumination without the harsh directness of overhead fixtures. The gentle, shifting shadows add movement and life to the space, creating an atmosphere that feels completely natural. Combined with strategic uplighting elsewhere in the landscape, moonlighting produces a balanced, layered lighting design.

Transformer Sizing and System Engineering

The transformer is the heart of your low-voltage lighting system, converting standard 120V household power to the safe 12V that powers your fixtures. Proper transformer sizing is one of the most critical engineering decisions in a landscape lighting installation, and it is an area where many less experienced installers make costly mistakes.

An undersized transformer causes dim, underperforming fixtures. An oversized transformer wastes energy and money. We calculate the exact wattage demand of every fixture on your system, add a 20% capacity buffer for future expansion, and select a transformer that matches. For larger properties, we may install multiple transformers strategically positioned to minimize voltage drop across long wire runs.

We use multi-tap transformers that allow us to adjust voltage output to compensate for wire length. Fixtures closest to the transformer may receive the standard 12V tap, while fixtures at the end of a long run receive a boosted 13V or 15V tap to compensate for voltage loss in the landscape wire. This ensures uniform brightness across your entire system.

Photocell Sensors and Automatic Operation

Every lighting system we install includes a photocell sensor that automatically turns the system on at dusk and off at a programmed time. There is no switch to flip, no timer to adjust seasonally, and no chance of forgetting to turn the lights on for evening guests. The photocell responds to ambient light levels, so your system activates at the right time year-round, even as sunset times shift from 5:30 PM in December to 7:45 PM in June.

For clients who want additional control, we offer smart transformer options with Wi-Fi connectivity and smartphone app control. These systems allow you to create custom lighting zones, dim specific areas, set schedules, and control your lights remotely.
